After 8 Years in Law Enforcement, I Knew It Was Time for a Change
I served as a Deputy Sheriff for the largest, full-service Sheriff's Office in Virginia. I worked on Patrol, Community Policing, as the agency's Public Information Officer, and finally as the Sergeant of the Employment Services Section which oversaw the agency's recruiting and background investigation efforts. I won two Life Saving Awards, a Meritorious Action Award, and was named the 2019 Deputy Sheriff of the Year for the entire State of Virginia. My career seemed to be going perfectly.... Â
But it wasn't...Â
I began doubting whether I wanted to stay in the profession that I had loved so much. I experienced many of the typical hardships and frustrations shared by my brothers and sisters in blue. As the months went by, that feeling of uncertainty grew. Finally, I accepted that I was ready to leave law enforcement and pursue a career in the private sector.

Law enforcement is notoriously poor at helping its officers prepare for life and careers after their years wearing the badge. My resume was a mess, my LinkedIn profile had not strategy, and I had no clue how to articulate my experience to civilians who have never served in law enforcement. I submitted dozens of applications and received endless "thanks but no thanks" messages in reply. What could a cop possibly offer a company in the private sector?Â
